What does Leadership Mean to You?

I attended an event on Leadership a couple of weeks ago put on by my friend, Sarah Weinrauch, of Sexy and Wealthy in Heels.  Look her up for a great networking event in Toronto with top-notch speakers.

This is a topic I’ve been interested to learn more about since I realized I am more of a leader than I thought. Beyond my family, I now know I have the ability to inspire others by being more authentic (I can do that!) and moving closer to what I feel in my core which is my purpose.

I see a leader as a confident team player who can influence and motivate a group towards a collectively bigger vision.

We discussed traits of leaders and how women can be better leaders in all areas of their life. Leaders pave the way for others to follow in their footsteps; they are accessible and aware of what’s going on and remove obstacles in order to reach the goal.

This reminds me a lot of what a parent does, it’s a supportive, nurturing role and we are mentors to guide and listen to what’s going on so we can learn and empower our child to try new things and take risks. We are always ‘planting seeds’ to provide growth. You can replace ‘child’ with ‘team’ if you were talking about a career.

We also learned we must lead ourselves. Knowing our core values and listening to our intuition will always lead us in the right direction.  There is a certain amount of trust we must put into ourselves and the Universe, and quiet our mind so we can be guided to do what is best for all. This was powerful for me.

Helping others lead themselves, such as empowering them to make decisions, and learning how to say ‘No’ are also important aspects of leadership. It’s a practice, so having the intention to be a leader will make it second nature for you.

I am leading myself now that I am trusting my intuition and following my internal guide to assert myself and go after where and what I’m drawn to.  I am not doubting myself, I know I am on the right path.

Leading yourself with love and support to create your life on your terms is an extremely important trait to develop. If you don’t feel like you are leading yourself well you probably aren’t leading others well either.

So go LEAD loud and proud!  It really does start and end with us!
